“Walkie-talkies?”

“Check.” The walkie-talkie chirped as Max pressed down the call button. “You there, Rivera?”

There was an eruption of static, but then Adilene responded. “I’m here.” Her voice was soft, not much louder than a whisper. “Sorry I can’t be there, Gordy.”

“It’s okay,” Gordy said. “You don’t have to apologize.”

“Still. I wish I could help in some way.”

“Just stay on the walkie, and we’ll keep you posted of what’s going on,” Gordy said.

“Deal. Just don’t use these radios until after my parents go to bed,” she instructed. “Not a minute before ten thirty, okay?”

Max stuck his tongue out at the radio, but turned the volume down.

“Flashlights?” Gordy continued with his checklist.

“Check.” Max clicked one of the flashlights on and off and then stuffed it into his backpack.

“Snacks?”

Max glanced over at an empty bag of trail mix. “Yeah, we’re gonna need to stock up again.”

“You ate that whole bag?” Gordy gaped at Max. “Already?”

“It was low-fat.”

“Fine. We’ll make a detour to the kitchen before going downstairs. Torpor Tonic?”

“Check . . . I guess.” Max held up a vial of green liquid.

“Yeah, that’s it. How many do we have?” Gordy hoped they wouldn’t be forced to use the knockout potion again, but he wasn’t taking any chances.

“Four. Two for each of us. For smashing in your dad’s face!”

“Give me those, please.” Gordy held out his hand. “You’re not smashing anything in my dad’s face.”

Max reluctantly passed over the vials of Torpor Tonic. “I was just kidding.”

“Detection Spray?” Gordy picked up the bottle of pink fluid resting next to him on the bed. “Check. Okay, I think we’re set.”

Downstairs, Mr. Stitser had been tied up with rope to a folding chair. The rope had been his dad’s idea. After all that had happened, Mr. Stitser couldn’t be one hundred percent positive that he wasn’t the one responsible, and being tied up seemed like the easiest way to keep him out of trouble.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Gordy had set up a camera on a tripod in the corner of the room pointing towards his dad’s chair.

His dad smiled. “Absolutely! It will be an adventure. I just don’t want any of the video showing up on the Internet, agreed?” He scowled at Max. “Could I have a drink of water, Mr. Warden?”

“Quiet, maggot!” Max shouted in his tough-guy voice. “You’ll drink when I say you drink! Just kidding, here you go.” Max brought a glass of ice water up to Mr. Stitser’s mouth and allowed him to sip.

“We’ll take two-hour shifts.” Gordy checked the time on the DVD player. “Do you want to start in the lab?”

“Nu-uh. No way!” Max protested. “I’m not volunteering to hang out in that freak show. I’m not crazy.”

“Is that okay if I go down first?” Gordy asked his dad.

Mr. Stitser glanced at Max and then back at Gordy. “You’re going to leave me all alone with him?” But he was smiling. “No, that’s fine. Whatever you need to do. We’ll be okay.”
